Antoine Coypel attributed to, - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(1661–1722)

The Triumph of Galatea, black and red chalk on laid paper, 19,5 x 26,8 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

The composition of the present drawing is related to the painting “Triumph of Galatea” by Antoine Coypel, which was also reproduced in an engraving by Charles Louis Simmoneau (1695) (cf. N. Garnier, Antoine Coypel 1661–1722, Paris 1989, Cat. 52, fig. 86). The preliminary drawing for the painting is kept in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (Inv. No. R. F. 12.340). Coypel’s painting which was presumably one of the earliest mythological depictions by the artist, is often seen as counterpart of his painting ““Bacchus and Ariadne” (Garnier 1989, Cat. 49).
