The present portrait is probably a student drawing based on a portrait study “Bust portrait of a boy” by Jakob Matthias Schmutzer which is kept in the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Vienna (Inv.-Nr. HZ-12.152) The collection of the Kupferstichkabinett owns several of these portrait studies in red chalk, which were acquired by the academy as early as in the 18th century to be used as master sheets in the classroom. The students had to make copies from these. The present sheet was probably also made as a student drawing based on Schmutzer’s model.
