Francesco Coghetti

Francesco Coghetti - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Bergamo 1801–1875 Rome) Death of the Virgin, presumably a design sketch for the painting on the high altar of the cathedral of Piacenza (ca. 1855–1862), signed Francesco Coghetti, pencil on paper, fixed to support, 28,2 x 16,5 cm, unmounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Anonymous collector’s mark “leaf”, Lugt 3539;
Private property, Germany.

The present sketch was presumably executed in preparation for the painting of the high altar of Piacenza, which was assigned to Coghetti in 1855. The work replaced a painting with the same subject by Camillo Procaccini which was severely damaged in the 19th century. Other preliminary drawings and bozzetti for the painting are preserved in the Palazzo Frizzoni, Bologna, in the Galleria Virglio, Rome, in the Accademia di S. Luca, Rome (Inv. 239) and in the Accademia Carrara di Bergamo (Inv. 2044). The present study may represent a first idea of the composition and may have been executed in ca. 1855, shortly after the artist had received the commission for the painting.
