Alois Kalvoda

Alois Kalvoda - 19th Century Paintings

(Brno 1875–1934 Klatov)
A Rose Garden, signed Al. Kalvoda, oil on canvas, 41.5x 66 cm, framed (frame damaged)

Provenance:
Private Collection, Austria since c. 1900.

Alois Kalvoda belongs to the circle of landscape painters who studied at the Prague Academy in 1887-1899 under the direction of Julius Mařák (1832-1899). This painting is one of the rare examples of Kalvoda’s work created just before 1900, when Mařák’s pupils searched for mutual creative inspiration and stimuli in their teacher’s workshop.
Therefore, it is no coincidence that similar themes occur in the work of Antonín Slavíček (1870-1910), the most progressive of Mařák’s students, and also in the paintings of Jan Honsa (1876-1937) and Antonín Hudeček (1872-1941), who repeatedly stayed in Mařák’s circle and painted with his pupils, although he was not officially registered in his studio.
