Lot No. 669

Pieter Francis Peters

Pieter Francis Peters - 19th Century Paintings

(Nymwegen 1818–1903 Stuttgart)
A View of the Bay of Santa Margherita (Genoa), Liguria, Italy, signed P. F. Peters, oil on panel, 28 x 73.5 cm, framed

Pieter Francis Peters originally trained as a glass painter with his father, before moving 1836 to Germany. He undertook several trips to Upper Bavaria, Tirol, Switzerland and Italy, which resulted in the production of several atmospheric landscape paintings. The area around the Bay of Santa Margherita, as seen in the following lot, was already a highly popular spot for tourism in the 19th century, as visitors aiming for Portofino often travelled first through Santa Margherita. Liguria was frequented by illustrious Italian and foreign personalities – for example, the diplomat, traveller and intelligence officer Aubrey Herbert, as well as the novelist Elizabeth von Arnim were amongst the people who made the area fashionable.
