Johann Hamza

Johann Hamza - 19th Century Paintings and Watercolours

(Telč 1850-1927 Vienna)
Portrait of Leo Slezak (1873-1946), signed J. Hamza, oil on canvas, 38 x 23.5 cm, unframed, (Rei)

Leo Slezak grew up in Mährisch Schönberg, now Šumperk. In addition to his apprenticeship as a gardener and locksmith, he took on extra roles at the Brno City Theater. His singing talent was discovered and he soon received a permanent engagement, shining as “Lohengrin” as early as 1896.
Further roles took him to Berlin, Breslau and Vienna. At the audition in Bayreuth, however, he was unable to convince the directors - including Cosima Wagner - because he had prepared himself for an unsuitable role, as he admits in his book “Meine sämtlichen Werke”.
He was engaged as a permanent member of the ensemble at the Vienna State Opera in 1901, and a few years later spent three seasons in New York at the Metropolitan Opera. Further guest appearances took him to Great Britain and Russia, among other places.
There are countless humorous episodes about Leo Slezak. After ending his active singing career, he worked as an actor, showing his talent as an excellent comedian in films with Hans Moser, Heinz Rühmann and Ilse Werner.
