Portrait of a man in armour, bust-length,
oil on canvas, 63 x 52 cm, framed
The present picture is a reduced version of Anthony van Dyck's half-length portrait of Sir William Killigrew, conserved in the Tate Britain, London (inv. no. T07896) and in which the sitter wears a fashionable black doublet with slashed sleeves. The present work is inscribed on the reverse 'an original drawn by Vandike of Sir William Killigrew... Max Rooses/Sir Anthony van Dyck/about 1635’. During the Civil War, Killigrew commanded one of Charles I's troops of horse that acted as the King's bodyguard, in keeping with the present portrayal of the sitter wearing armour.
