Johann Baptist Reiter

Johann Baptist Reiter - A Viennese Collection

(Urfahr 1813-1890 Vienna)
Lexi, the artist’s daughter with vine leaves in her hair, signed J. B. Reiter, oil on canvas, 54 x 43 cm, octagonal, framed (frame damaged), (Rei)

Compare:
Alice Strobl, Johann Baptist Reiter, Anton Schnell, Vienna, Munich 1963, p. 98, no. 335 (girl with vine leaves in her hair, bust portrait;
Galerie Asenbaum, Vienna);
Lothar Schultes, Johann Baptist Reiter, monograph on the occasion of the exhibition "Johann Baptist Reiter" at NORDICO Stadtmuseum Linz and Schlossmuseum Linz, 11 June-3 November 2013, pp. 228-231. Exhibited: Neumann und Salzer 1937, no. 70.

We are grateful to Dr. Lothar Schultes for the scholarly advice. Fourteen similar portraits of Reiter's daughter Lexi are known. This was the artist’s most successful subject. The different versions display only slight variations in the depiction of the head, but vary between bust portraits, half-length portraits and one knee-length portrait. The whereabouts of a life-size variant, which was sold at Dorotheum in 1919, are as yet unknown.
