Lodovico Cigoli Circle (1559-1613) - Master Drawings and Prints until 1900

Anonymous collector’s mark monogram WS (not with Lugt);
Auction sale Millon, Drouot-Richelieu, Paris, 30th October 2020, lot 19 (as Giovanni Bilivert attributed to);
Private collection, Italy.

The present drawing is a copy after the angel in Caravaggio’s painting “Saint Matthew and the Angel” (ca. 1599-1600) in the Capella Contarelli in San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome. The sheet can be attributed to a Florentine artist active in Rome in the circle of Lodovico Cigoli, who may have copied the painting in situ. The present copy was recently mentioned with an attribution to the surrounding of Cigoli in an article by Prof. Miles L. Chappell (See: Miles L. Chappell, "A Double-sided Sheet of Preparatory Studies Reattributed to Cristofano Allori", in: Master Drawings, Volume 60, Number 3, 2022, pp. 321-326, n. 5).
