Lot No. 143

Jacob Jordaens attributed to (1593-1678)

Jacob Jordaens attributed to (1593-1678) - Master Drawings and Prints until 1900

A portait of a man wearing a hood, red and black chalk, on laid paper, 27,5 x 18,5 cm, browned, fleckig, mounted, framed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Private collection, Austria.

The man with the hood in the present drawing is depicted in numerous paintings by Jacob Jordaens from the 1640s and can be found above all in different versions of the “Bean King” in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Brüssel (Inv. 3545), in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (Inv. 1406) and in the Gemäldegalerie in Kassel (Inv. GK 108). Variants of the figure are also represented in the painting "Susanna and the Elders " in the Statens Museum vor Kunst, Kopenhagen (Inv. KMSSp. 235) and in the "Banquet of Cleopatra " in der Hermitage of St. Petersburg (Inv.8536). The present drawing can be connected with numerous compositions which Jordaens executed at this time. Moreover, the sheet is almost identical with a study of the same man in a sketch, which was offered by the Dorotheum on April 3, 2020 (lot 120) and may be also datable to the 1640s. The head studies apparently served as a prototype, to which the artist harked back always again in his paintings.

We are grateful to Prof. Dr. Hans Vlieghe, who confirmed the atrribution to Jacob Jordaens by means of a high resolution digital photograph.
