Jan Chełmiński was a Polish artist, renowned for his battle scenes and portraits of military personalities. He depicted uniforms and weapons with historical accuracy and enjoyed great success during his lifetime.
After first studying in Warsaw, he entered the Munich Academy of Arts in 1875 under the auspices of the well-known military and equestrian painter Franz Adam. Chełmiński travelled and exhibited extensively throughout Europe, until he settled in New York from 1915 until his death.
