After studying at the Dresden Art Academy, Eduard Leonhardi became a pupil of the famous German painter Ludwig Richter. From 1864 he was an honorary member of the Dresden Art Academy. He received his nickname ‘painter of the German forest’ because of his romantic landscape paintings, which often feature forests, streams or lakes. He was also fascinated by the depiction of brewing thunderstorms, and painted this theme repeatedly.
