According to a tradition which is not clearly documented, Germanos of Patras blessed the flag of the freedom fighters in their resistance against the foreign Ottoman rule in the Peloponnese monastery of Agia Lavra near Kalavrita and swore the revolutionaries in to continue the fight for an independent Greek republic. According to Greek historiography, this is considered the beginning of the Greek freedom fight. The monastery is a national monument and 25 March has become a national holiday in Greece since then
