La Camargo, a bay mare born in 1898 (by Childwick, out of Belle et Bonne), owned by Adolphe Abeille, was one of the all-time greats on the racecourse. In 1900, as a 2-year-old, she won the Prix de la Forêt at Chantilly. In 1901 at Longchamp she won the Prix de Diane and La Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (the French Classics for 3-year old fillies), the Prix Vermeille (for 3-year-olds and older) and the Prix du Cadran (over 4000 m). In 1902 she won the Grosser Preis von Baden, in 1903 the Prix des Sablons and the Prix d’Ispahan; the latter again in 1904. In all, she ran 35 races during her career 1900-1904, winning 25 of them and being placed in seven.
The Haras de Jardy was the famous breeding operation established in 1890 by Edmond Blanc at Marnes-la-Coquette outside Paris, where La Camargo was sent after her remarkable racing career ended in 1904. She was admired at Jardy by King Edward VII during his visit in May 1905, the year the present painting is dated. In 1911 she was bought by Lady James Douglas for her recently established Harwood Stud, near Newbury, and exported to England. La Camargo died at Newmarket in May 1913, following a veterinary error.
