Lot No. 50

Albrecht Dürer

(Nuremberg 1471-1528)
Ecce Homo, c. 1497-1500, from the series "The Great Passion", woodcut, monogrammed AD, on laid paper with watermark "A in a circle with HW" (Meder watermark 304), 39,2 x 28,4 cm, edition without text after 1511, Bartsch 9, Meder 118 f (of g), mounted, framed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Private collection, South Germany

Excellent, vigorous impression with rich contrasts of the edition without text after 1511, with the mountain gap in the halberd and the wormholes in the figure of Christ. The earlier cracks in the lower margin inconspicuously made up in black ink through the monogram and the fat man's undergarment. Very fine impression with the watermark "A in a circle with HW" mentioned by Meder for this state and for other sheets of the Great Passion series (Meder watermark 304). With a tiny loss made-up at the lower left corner, but otherwise in perfect condition.
