Rudolf Ribarz was born in 1848, the year of revolution. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Albert Zimmermann and was friends with Emil Jakob Schindler and Eugen Jettel. He travelled through South Tyrol, Trentino and on to Venice between 1870 and 1872. The harbour town of Chioggia lies not far from Venice. Austria had lost it to Italy along with the rest of the Veneto region only a few years earlier.
