The son of a dawdler Thomas Ender and his twin brother the history painter Johann Nepomuk Ender were born in Vienna. They entered together the Vienna Academy in 1806. Thomas Ender studied history painting with Hubert Maurer. In 1810 he moved to the landscape class of Laurenz Janscha. After Janscha’s death Joseph Mössmer became his teacher. After several study trips Ender was awarded the „Große Malerpreis“ in 1817. Prince Clemens Metternich acquired the prizewinning painting and from then on supported the artist. In 1817 Ender participated in the Austrian expedition to Brazil and accompanied Metternich to Rome. From 1823 on Ender was active for Metternich in the Austrian Salzkammergut; in 1826 he travelled to Paris. In 1828 he was appointed Kammermaler by Archduke Johann and participated in his expedition to the Orient and to South Russia. From 1837 to 1851 Ender was professor at the Vienna Academy and travelled again when he sojourned in Italy from 1855 to 1857.
