The author mentions another study for the same theme ("Ein Märtyrer vor dem Marterpfahl, dem ein Engel erscheint", 1835, pencil auf paper, 14,5 x 8,4 cm – A matyr next to a stake, an angel appears to him), which may also be related to the present drawing (see: Grabner 2011, WV-Nr. 197, S. 234).
