Rudolf Ernst

Rudolf Ernst - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(Vienna 1854–1932)
The tomb of Sultan Mehmed I (1379–1421), signed R. Ernst,
oil on panel, 73.6 x 54.4 cm, framed, (GG)

Exhibited:
Paris, Salon 1911, no. 670.

Provenance:
European, Private collection

Rudolph Ernst studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under history painters August Eisenmenger and Anselm Feuerbach. He travelled to Italy and, in the 1880s, to Spain and Morocco. In 1890 he also visited Constantinople. Along with Ludwig Deutsch, he settled in Paris in 1876. From the 1880s, he focused on Orientalist subjects inspired by souvenirs accumulated during his travels. The scenes depicted in his paintings were often imagined and most of them were executed in his studio in Paris.

The present lot depicts the Yeşil Türbe (Green Tomb) in Bursa. The tomb is the mausoleum of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed I. It was built by Mehmed’s son and successor Murad II following the death of the sovereign in 1421. It was designed by the architect Hacı Ivaz Pasha. The royal catafalque stands on a platform. It is richly decorated with scriptures, blue-green glazed tiles and flower designs. The lower section of the walls is also lined with blue-green tiles. The mihrab, a semi-circular niche in the qibla wall indicating the direction of Mecca, is visible in the background. It is unusual for Ernst to depict a well-known, real place, a place that is not a figment of his imagination.
