At the beginning of 1870, Emil Jakob Schindler rented a room in one of the old imperial mills along the Prater embankment to explore this new, picturesque, and stimulating world. The lively hustle and bustle and confusion of crates and bales, of carts and people at the docking point for steamboats fascinated him and resulted in a series of works. He painted on site on small wooden panels in horizontal format.

The present work is captivating because of the authentically captured atmosphere at the water's edge, the humid air, the muddy ground and the constant blowing of a light wind. The painter sold the picture to the collector Carl Sarg before presenting it at the Great Annual Exhibition in Vienna.
