Metternich secured a patronage in Italy for both brothers so that Thomas could enable his landscape painting to mature to new heights. The lighting conditions on the Apennine Peninsula were the focus of his studies over the course of numerous trips. Ender’s particular focus lay on realistically reproducing topography as well as introducing an artistic aspect.
