1939 Steyr 55 “Baby“ (no reserve)

1939 Steyr 55 “Baby“ (no reserve) - Classic Cars

Model Steyr Baby from family collection!!

At the beginning of 1936, Steyr released its first small car on the market, the Steyr 50. The model was frameless, i.e. self-supporting with a streamlined shape. The four-cylinder boxer engine was brand new and seated far to the front. This resulted in a lot of space in the interior, which could be opened up with a large sliding sunroof. That the Steyr lovingly called Baby was a great success was proven by its impressive sales figures. In spring 1938, the more powerful version, the 55, was released on the market.

This Steyr 55 was one of three Steyr Babies in the services of a mill in Rheinland Pfalz. In addition to this red one, there were also a green one and a black one. The original vehicle registration papers and registration certificate still exist from one of the three, which shows that the car was authorized to be used by the mill family for the war effort or for trips that were a matter of life and death. The mounted hooded headlights are also believed to have its origins here. After the war, in June 1955, this Steyr 55 was handed over to the mill owner’s son. The fact that the car was back on the road before the end of the German occupation is shown in the photo to the right, dated on July 31, 1948, with his wife, eldest daughter and Steyr, including an occupation license plate. The built-in third headlight is a clear indicator for identifying this car.

In 1978, the Steyr moved to Lake Wolfgang together with its owner. The old Polaroid photo in which the individual license plate is displayed shows that the car already had the same appearance back then as it does today. Despite it being just a small part of a Mercedes-dominated collection in its new, old home, it always had a place in its owner’s heart and also later in his living room. Test reports over many years confirm that the Steyr constantly received the necessary maintenance and excursions. The auction welcomes this piece of Austrian automotive history, which openly puts the marks from the years on display and thus tells its unique story!
