...19th-century representations of landscapes in the High Alps were shaped above all by Lepold Scheiring’s imposing depictions. Max von Esterle, just like Otto Rasim, managed to recreate the vibrant atmosphere of snow thanks to pointillist brushwork, whilst Gustav Bechler and Max Angerer were able to capture the mood that characterised their familiar milieus. Andreas Einberger instilled his winter images with a local ambience by depicting specific regional events. Unlike them, Walde always portrays the marked physiognomy of nature that finds its matching expression in both form and atmosphere. The mountain landscapes of Egger-Lienz, Einberger, Nikodem, Prachensky and the Schwaz artists are shorn of all human decorative figures. In contrast to the above, Walde integrated man into these landscapes and made him part of the painting, managing to reveal with him the vastness and untouched beauty of nature. Likewise, his personal experience of the mountainous landscape around Kitzbühel – in later years also of South Tyrol – also becomes a determining characteristic of this oeuvre.
