1973 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL

1973 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL - CLASSIC CARS and Automobilia

In April 1971, Mercedes-Benz presented the successor to the Pagoda, internally referred to as R 107, as the model 350 SL, and had it next to the 450 SL at the Geneva show in 1973. Particularly in the US, Mercedes sports-models with big engines proved highly popular. It was only during the energy crisis in 1974, that the 280 SL was made available. Visually the R 107 remained almost unchanged, and it was part of the Mercedes range until 1989 making it the longest running model series.

The present 450 SL was first registered in the US on 1 July 1973. As a result it barely escaped the fate of its later siblings whose appearance was impaired, to put it mildly, by the bulky bumpers required by new safety regulations. The consigner acquired the SL in 2007 with a mileage of 91,480 in Virginia and brought it back to Europe with him. The paint had already been restored previously, later the SL was equipped with headrests and air condition. The consigner enjoyed his SL for nearly 10 years and 10.000 miles. Now this 450 in attractive condition and contemporary colour scheme will provide a reasonable priced ticket into the world of old-timers. Even for everyday use it is a hard act to follow in a summer like the one just gone by!
