Mixed lot (2 items): Zande (or Azande), Boa, Dem. Rep. of Congo: A shortsword and an upper arm knife with sheath. - Tribal Art

1: A shortsword with long, lancet shaped and double-edged iron blade. Its typical tribal décor consists of forged, long lines to the left of the middle ridge on both sides. With a small, concave wooden hilt. L: 54.2 cm.
2: A smaller version of the same type (iron blade with linear décor), used by the Boa, Zande and related groups in northern Congo. With a leather sheath from neighbouring Sudan. The sheath has a leather strap that allows the knife to be carried on the upper arm. Its leather is dyed black and red, with embossed linear decoration. The sheath is held together by means of a brass cuff embossed with dotted bands, and features a brass ‘shoe’ with linear décor in the lower section. L: 44 cm (in total).
Both blades are rusty as a result of prolonged improper storage. Minor age-related damage to the sheath leather. (ME)
