Karl Raupp

Karl Raupp - 19th Century Paintings

(Darmstadt 1837–1918 Munich)
Mother with Child by the Lakeshore, signed K. Raupp, oil on panel, 24.3 x 42 cm, framed, (minor damage to frame), (Rei)

Karl Raupp, also known as the “Chiemsee Raupp”, favoured motifs depicting the local landscape around Chiemsee and its inhabitants. Raupp combined the precision of his observation, characteristic of the Biedermeier style, with contemporary genre depictions. The painter received his artistic training in Frankfurt, at the Munich Academy, and from Karl Theodor von Piloty. His most well-known pupils include Karl Wopfner who, like his teacher, also visited the painters’ colony on the Fraueninsel on Lake Chiemsee. The reputation of this group of artists, the first of its kind in Germany, extended far beyond the country’s borders and attracted painters from England, Denmark, Sweden and the USA. The works by Karl Raup and Joseph Wopfner also encouraged many other artists of their day to search out Lake Chiemsee as a source of inspiration.
