Wojciech Kossak, who made a name for himself as a painter of historical scenes and portraits, was significantly influenced in his artistic oeuvre by his period of military service for the K&K monarchy. His study years took him to the art school in Cracow as well as the Munich Academy. Kossak was the artist who executed the panorama of Raclawice, in memory of the battle won by Polish troops there in 1794. Kossak’s patrons included the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II, and Emperor Franz Joseph I, both of whom he portrayed.
