Wassilij Sternberg who was a graduate of the class of the landscape painter M. Vorobieff and held a scholarship at the St Petersburg Academy of Art in Italy, was also very interested in genre painting. The characteristic heads of the Italian fishermen remind one of Sternberg’s skill as a caricaturist, which always impressed his friends and colleagues. These included the writer Taras Schewtschenko and the composer Michail Glinka. Wassilij Sternberg’s oil paintings, watercolours and drawings are to be found in Russia’s leading museums.
