Rudolf von Alt
(Vienna 1812–1905) View at The Graben towards Singerstraße, sketch-like pencil drawing, gently coloured with watercolours, signed R. Alt, 34,6 x 48,7 cm, passepartout, handwritten inventory number Albertina 28794, damaged from folding and two tears at the lower right edge, mounted on cardboard, (Hu)
Literature: Walter Koschatzky, Rudolf von Alt, 1812–1905, Salzburg 1976, 2. Ed., p. 275, 1848/08. Provenance: Josefine Winter Collection from 1904/1906; Compulsory sale to the Albertina 1941; Restitution to the rightful heirs of Josefine Winter in 2008. The Graben, formerly a „produce market“ and then a „herb market“, became the place to meet and be seen for Viennese society. By the 18th century upmarket shops and restaurants were being established in the buildings here. The layout of the Graben remained unchanged until 1840. At both ends of the Graben stood well-known buildings, closing off the Graben at the Kohlmarkt and the Stock-im-Eisen-Platz. (Klaus Albrecht Schröder, Maria Luise Sternath (pub.) , Rudolf von Alt, 1812- 1905, Exhibition Albertina, Vienna 2005, p. 104.
