The landscape artist and animal painter Friedrich Voltz was initially apprenticed to his father, a copper engraver and painter, but later switched to attend the Munich Academy. He worked as an etcher at the outset of his career, but experimented with landscape painting under the influence of his friends Albrecht Adam and Carl Spitzweg. He found inspiration in the Munich hinterland and the Bavarian Alps. In 1841 he came across the work of the Dutch Baroque animal painter Paulus Potter, which awoke an interest in the representation of animals. Subsequently, he masterfully combined lifelike scenes of animals with atmospheric landscapes. He was highly successful with this combination of the two genres, and was able to establish himself as a landscape and animal painter.
