Niccolò Cassana
(Venice 1659–1713 London)
Portrait of a Lady as Allegory of Peace,
oil on canvas, 75 x 60 cm, framed
We are grateful to Professor Ugo Ruggeri, who has identified the present painting as a work by Cassana. The painting is accompanied by a written certificate.
The sophisticated composition and skilful technique of this painting make it a fine example of international court portraiture of the late 17th century. The Genoese element of style that distinctly manifests itself in the present painting leads us to Bernardo Strozzi, who around 1632/33 moved to Venice together with Giovanni Francesco Cassana, the artist’s father. Niccolò Cassana started to work as a portraitist in 1683. He then hoped to succeed Justus Sustermans as court painter in Florence and is the author of numerous portraits of members of the Medici family. In his later years, he travelled to London, where he portrayed Queen Anne and members of her court.
