Balthasar Denner
(Altona 1685–1749 Rostock)
Portrait of a young woman,
oil on copper, 42 x 32 cm, framed
Balthasar Denner was a successful portrait painter. In 1721 he produced his masterpiece at Schloss Gottorf in Schleswig, a group portrait including 21 people from the Schleswig-Holstein dynasty (today in the collection of the Duke of Oldenburg, Schloss Rastede). This portrait of a young woman is one of Denner’s portraits of the bourgeoisie. It combines precise anatomical drawing in his own individual manner with a soft, less academic style. It was this style that allowed him to become one of the most highly regarded European portraitists of his time.
