Massimo Stanzione

Massimo Stanzione - Old Master Paintings

(Orta di Atella circa 1585-circa 1658 Naples)
The adoration of the shepherds,
signed: E MAX F,
oil on canvas, 117 x 155 cm, framed

Provenance:
New York, private collection;
New York, Sotheby’s, 9.1.1980, lot 112;
Philadelphia, private collection;
European private collection.

Literature:
S. Schütze/T. C. Willette, Massimo Stanzione, L’opera Completa, Electa Napoli 1992, p. 329, ill. 329.

The depiction of the night scene combines the theme of the adoration of the shepherds from St. Luke’s Gospel with a representation of luminous Christ Child from the Revelation of St. Birgitta of Sweden. In order to achieve the nocturnal effects, Stanzione employed a darker ground than normal and applied the colours in thin glazes. In this way, the entire composition appears darker and the modelling of the faces contrasts with the background. In order to date the painting, a direct comparison with the Adoration of the Shepherds held by the Museo di Capodimonte, Naples, or the Madonna with the Christ Child in the Palazzo Corsini in Rome may be made. Willette suggests a date of the second half of the 1640s in the case of this painting.
