Johann Knapp The artist was trained at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and achieved fame for his paintings of flowers and fruit. As a pupil of Johann Baptist Drechsler, he produced preparatory sketches for flower studies which were used in the Academy. During his career Knapp also gave many art lessons to the aristocracy, and from 1804 he worked at Schönbrunn Palace, documenting in paintings the botanical garden with its manifold range of plants. Knapp’s works are held by various museums in Austria, including the Belvedere. His extremely accurate depictions of plants, small animals and minerals constitute an important source of scientific records.
