Werner Sumowski says of our picture, “Sketchily drawn picture from the second half of the 50s.... The motif of the garlanded ox, which is being led to slaughter with music and wine, makes reference to the aphorism, ‘Suffering follows cheerfulness’ (A. Henkel and A. Schöne, Emblemata, Handbuch zur Sinnbildkunst des XVI. und XVII. Jahrhunderts, Stuttgart 1967, Sp. 530).
