Lot No. 236

Jean-Frédéric Schall

(Strasbourg 1752–1825 Paris) A fête galante with a blind man's bluff game, oil on canvas, 43.3 x 57.2 cm, in an elaborately carved and gilded Louis XV frame,

Provenance: Christie’s auction, London, 1 April 1854, lot 27 (as ‘Le Prince’).

Jean-Frédéric Schall exhibited for the first time at the Salon of 1779. His oeuvre, cheerful genre scenes, was produced in the years leading up to the outbreak of revolution. With its courtly dancers, gallant and erotic pastoral scenes he was paying homage to an aristocratic way of life which disappeared with the easy-going ancien régime. Schall's painting makes this 'joie de vivre' very evident and provides historical information about the cultural customs and costumes of the time.
