This painting needs to be seen in relation to three pictures which are to be found in the Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, ‘A black man from the Congo in a large hat', ‘A black man from the Congo with a decorated cabinet ' and 'A black man from the Congo with elephant tusks'. All three works are traditionally attributed to Albert Eckhout and are listed in the catalogue raisonné by T. Thomsen (Albert Eckhout, Copenhagen 1938, pp. 26, 28, 29, 99, 169, figs. 12–14).
