This subject was very popular in the 16th century and it is known in various versions. The Dutch painter, Marinus Claesz. van Reymerswaele was influenced by Quentin Massys and Albrecht Dürer and was interested in the social and religious themes of Lutheranism. Reymerswaele was documented in for the first time in 1509 in Antwerp. His works are dated man between 1521 and 1560. They are characterised by a restless draughtsmanship, powerful cool colours and at times the caricatured nature of his physiognomies. His painting mirror the climate of turmoil during the Reformation. The best examples of his work are to be found in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, the Academia San Fernando, Madrid, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, the Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp and the Museo del Bargello, Florence.
