(Bologna - working in the 18th century) The Church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, Rome, signed on the reverse ‚Dipinse Sarti Bolognese Fran‘ces‘co‘ verificare ‚ dated ca. 1720 , tempera and watercolour on paper, on vellum, 19.5 x 39 cm, framed.

This work by the Bolognese painter Francesco Sarti shows the facade of the Roman basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme before the alterations commissioned by Benedict XIV in 1741. This painting is a faithful reproduction, the first known in colour, of the building which was subsequently changed, and as such this work is an important reference.
