In this lot, the Viennese painter Leopold Fertbauer, who specialised in individual and group portraits, portrays the Baltic-German aristocrat General Pawel Jakowlewitsch Rennenkampf (Paul Andreas Edler von Rennenkampff) (Helmеt, Livonia 1790-1857 St. Petersburg). The highlights of his military career included his participation in the Battle of Borodino and the Battles of Bautzen, Leipzig and Katzbach. In 1816, he accompanied General Jermolov’s embassy to Persia, after which he served in the Caucasus Corps. In 1829, he was appointed Major General and promoted to His Majesty’s retinue. Rennenkampff took part in the Russo-Persian War of 1826-28 and the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-29. In 1854, he was appointed Lieutenant General, and took part in the defence of Sevastopol during the Crimean War.
Rennenkampff is depicted with the following orders of merit: the Sash of the Order of St. Anna 1st Class and the Star with the Imperial Crown (1831), the Cross of the Order of St. Vladimir 3rd Class on the collar (1830?), the cross Pour le Mérite on the collar (1814), the star of the Persian Order of the Lion and the Sun (1828), five breast medals: “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812”, “For the entry into Paris”, of the Russian nobility, “For the Persian War”, “For the Turkish War”, the Order of the Legion of Honour (1814); the golden sword “For bravery”.
The portrait shows him in a self-confident pose with crossed arms and a sure look in his eye. He stands in front of a red curtain, with a panoramic landscape opening up behind this. The magnificent dark green uniform with the numerous orders of merit and the red sash are testament to the success of the young general.

Павел Яковлевич Ренненкампф (Paul Andreas Edler von Rennenkampff) (Хельмет в Лифляндии, 1790–1857, Санкт-Петербург), барон. Участник Бородинского сражения, сражений при Бауцене, Лейпциге, Кацбахе и взятия Парижа. В 1816 году сопровождал посольство генерала Ермолова в Персию, после чего служил при Кавказском корпусе. Участник Персидской кампании 1826-1828 годов. С 1829 года – генерал-майор, в том же году определён в Свиту Его Величества. Участник русско-турецкой войны 1828-1829 годов. В 1854 году произведен в генерал-лейтенанты, участвовал в обороне Севастополя.
Ренненкампф изображен со следующими наградами: лента Ордена Св. Анны 1-ой степени и звезда с императорской короной (1831), крест Ордена Св. Владимира 3-ей степени на шейной ленте (1830?), крест прусского Ордена Pour le Mérite на шейной ленте (1814), звезда персидского Ордена Льва и Солнца (1828), пять нагрудных медалей: «В память Отечественной войны 1812 года», «За взятие Парижа», Дворянская, «За персидскую войну», «За турецкую войну»; Орден Почетного Легиона (1814); золотое оружие „За храбрость“.
