1938 Horch 853 Sports Convertible

1938 Horch 853 Sports Convertible - Classic Cars

Elaborately restored vehicle!
Owned by the restorer for 20 years!

Horch launched its new five-litre model in 1935, which caught the eye with its remarkable sophistication. The highlight of the engine was its top side camshaft, driven by an upright shaft. A particular sensation was the sports convertible 850-Sport, whose beautiful and elegant body was highlighted by a resplendent, two-tone paint job and other features. Passengers reclined in heavy, delightfully crafted leather, surrounded by precisely designed instruments.

The 853 evolution was presented in 1937; its main difference was an increase in power to 120 hp, bringing the car’s prestige ever closer to the Mercedes 500. The inline eight engine was characterised by masterful transmission and remarkable maximum power. The Model 853 A added the crowning glory to the 853 sports convertible in 1938. The ‘A’ refers to a new gearbox of the type ZF AK4, with additional cruise gear, known as the motorway gear. Production of this premium automobile comes to an end with the outbreak of war in 1939. Only 619 were ever built.

A ‘prisoner of war’, this Horch was not returned to Germany until 1995, in a desolate state. The consignor purchased the 853 in a partially restored condition in 1998. The metalwork and paint job had been completed by this time. The consignor commissioned the restoration of all technical components, which was performed with great love and skill. The interior features and convertible roof were also refurbished, attaching great importance to the use of original parts! The consignor, a respected member of the Horch Club, intended to drive the heavy convertible, so he also fitted a mechanical steering support. It turns even difficult stretches of the road into child’s play and is easy to dismantle as well.

The Horch was registered as a vintage car with H-plates in the summer of 2001. Since then, the sports convertible has driven almost 10,000 pleasurable kilometres on numerous excursions. The ZF gearbox AK4 from the 853 A was retrofitted to protect the driver and the engine by reducing the revolutions by around 30 percent and allowing more leisurely driving at a moderate motor speed.

Overall, this impressive Horch 853 is the embodiment of a luxury vehicle that has more than proven its roadworthiness after complete restoration by a skilled expert. The enthusiast will purchase a large German car with the innovation of Horch’s top model: in total, a prestigious pre-war classic and keen traveller!

NB: the German registration papers erroneously describe the car as a Model 853 A.
