One of 500 Volumex Spiders, and only 139 in black!

Production and marketing of Pininfarina’s car continued as the Spidereuropa after Fiat stopped the 124 Spider assembly lines in 1982. The Volumex was presented at the end of 1983. At its heart was a supercharged engine. But even more impressive than the 135 hp was the significantly elevated torque, which enabled a very beefed-up passage. Brembo brakes were fitted to tame the beast. Available only in black and white or red-metallic, the Volumex were immediately recognisable thanks to the three-part speedline rims and broader fenders. There was a highlight strip running all round the car. 500 were produced in total, 139 in black.

A Viennese car dealer gave his wife this Spider Volumex as a gift, so it is hardly surprising he made sure the car looked quite the ticket by adding the optional leather features. Initially registered to the family business, the Spider has since been officially owned by the dealer’s wife, who has kept its old black license plate to the present day. A Sunday car, the Spider was driven very rarely, but always in good company and usually with siblings emblazoned with Maserati’s trident logo. The resulting (lack of) milage is perfectly evident in the vehicle’s pristine condition. The convertible is in its original state and has even preserved its unblemished beige roof. Although rarely used, the Volumex was still serviced regularly, so the condition of its mechanical parts is as good as the car’s overall look. It was given a major, 360° inspection in 2016. All in all, it would be hard to find another example of this extremely rare convertible in a similarly outstanding condition!
