1956 Rumi Scoiattolo (no reserve)

1956 Rumi Scoiattolo (no reserve) - Classic Cars

The ‘Italian Squirrel’

Rumi’s basic idea was to create a hybrid motorbike and scooter. This is most evident in the unusually large wheels for a scooter. But the result was nevertheless a motorcycle that offered the rider and passenger the accustomed protection and comfort of a scooter, but with the safe handling of a motorcycle perched on 14 inch wheels. It was powered by a proven 125 cc Rumi engine. This two stroke engine with its two horizontal cylinders took to the roads in a variety of tuning levels and models – from everyday to superbike versions. But the two-wheeler is even fun to ride in its tame iteration as a scooter, and most certainly produces a deeply satisfying sound.

This Squirrel – the literal translation of the Italian model name – was registered 1956 in Austria. Evidently the buyer wanted more than just a dutiful Puch scooter or a stylish but ubiquitous Vespa, preferring instead a comparatively cheeky Rumi with its zippy engine. And he deserves to be congratulated on his choice. Today you have the rare opportunity to enjoy the summer and to garner appreciative glances at the ice cream parlour when rolling up on this exotic scooter. The last owner completely refurbished the Runi a few years ago, displaying a keen hand for engines by creating an almost magical powertrain. A 1956 model, the scooter already has a four-speed gearbox and is reportedly good for at least 100 km/h. If you are brave enough. Anyone can ride a Vespa!
