Lot No. 124

Bernardo Castello

Bernardo Castello - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Genova 1557–1629) A scene from the story of Alexander the Great, design for a lunette, pen and brown ink over pencil, brown wash, heightened with white, on laid paper, old mount, figure sketches in pencil by another hand on the reverse, 19 x 34,8 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

The present drawing may have been made in preparation for a fresco which was part of a cycle depicting the life of Alexander the Great. At least the shape of the lunette would suggest, that it belonged to a project which included a wall decoration. Stylistically, the drawing may come from the late work of Bernardo Castello. It may have been made in preparation for one of the paintings of the loggia of the Villa Saluzzo in Albaro, Genova, which were dedicated to the battles between Alexander the Great and King Porus.

The attribution to Bernardo Castello was confirmed by Prof. Jonathan Bober by means of a high-resolution digital photograph.
