Lot No. 155

Venetian School, 1st half of the 18th century,

Venetian School, 1st half of the 18th century, - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

Two saints, pen and brown ink, over traces of black chalk, brown wash, on laid paper, 17,5 x 10,8 cm and 18,2 x 9,5 cm, trimmed along the figures’ outlines, unmounted, unframed, (2), (Sch)

Provenance:
The verso of the female figure with five marks “lion” (not with Lugt).

The two present drawings could have served as corrections or additions in a larger composition study. It could also be possible that the figures were intended for a shadow theater which belonged to a cultural tradition in 18th century Venice. The two drawings are stylistically comparable with works by Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini (1675–1745) and Antonio Guardi (1699–1760). Comparable drawings by Guardi can be found in his studies for the “Fasti Veneziani” (1740/50;
cf. A. Morassi, Tutti di disegni di Antonio, Francesco e Giacomo Guardi, Venice 1975, Cat. Nos. 66 ff.)
