Christian Griepenkerl

Christian Griepenkerl - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Oldenburg 1839–1916 Vienna) A design for a wall painting in the Villa Simon in Vienna Hietzing, titled “Entwürfe für die Wandgemälde im pompejanischen Zimmer des Herrn Dr. Simon Hietzing” im Zentrum “Hochzeit der Aphrodite mit Adonis” (designs for the wall paintings in the Pompeian style, the “Wedding of Aphrodite and Adonis” in the center),with handwritten texts and dimensions, signed and dated Ch. Griepenkerl 1872, pencil, watercolor on paper, 20 x 45 cm, mounted, framed, (BH)

Die Villa Simon in Hietzing, Gloriettegasse 17, was dismantled after the second World War. The building was commissioned by Eduard Simon (1847-1893) and the architect was Georg Niemann (1841–1912) from Hannover. The villa is also mentioned in the book “Der arme Trillionär: Aufstieg und Untergang des Inflationskönigs Sigmund Bosel” von Georg Ransmayr (The Poor Trillionaire: The Rise and Fall of the inflation king Sigmund Bosel… ) Ransmayr writes:” The two-storey estate of the house in Gloriettegasse 17 was a palatial residential building in a prime location with a park-like garden on a total area of 13,000 square meters…” The Allgemeine Bauzeitung of 1874 published sketches of the Villa Gloriettegasse of Mister Simon and wrote: A single room has received a richer decoration, one of the small salons on the ground floor, which was decorated with scenographic murals based on Pompeian motifs and painted in wax colors;
the figures of these depictions were executed by Professor Griepenkerl.” The Deutsche Zeitung of January 29, 1872 wrote: “From the studios (Griepenkerl) (…) Of charming grace are Griepenkerl’s compositions for the decoration of a room in the Pompeian style. The villa in Hietzing of the banker Simon which was built by Professor Niemann will hold this splendid decoration in its walls. The three graces, symbolic depictions of the elements and the seasons of the years are envisaged for the ceiling. The sketch made for the ceiling murals shows in addition to these depictions a true Pompeian ceiling division made with the finest taste and understanding. The side walls will narrate the myth of Adonis in five representations.”
