Lot No. 573 -

Hans Makart and Workshop

Hans Makart and Workshop - 19th Century Paintings

(Salzburg 1840–1884 Vienna)
A Bouquet of Flowers, 1884, oil on canvas, 205 x 118 cm, framed

Provenance:
S. Kende, Vienna, 5 October 1948, lot 474;

Catalogued and illustrated in:
Gerbert Frodl, Hans Makart. Monographie und Werkverzeichnis, Salzburg 1974, p. 426, no. 446;
Gerbert Frodl, Hans Makart. Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde, Vienna 2013, p. 308, no. 519/4.

The present lot is one of four flower pieces that examines the composition of the flower bouquets remaining in the estate of Hans Makart (Belvedere, Vienna, inv. no. 3745). With slight variations, such as the painted architectural framing, this painting is probably Makart‘s last („his last one a rich flower piece“ cf. Ludwig Hervesi, Wiener Totentanz, Nachlass Makart, Stuttgart 1899, p. 190). As Gerbert Frodl points out (Frodl, Makart, Vienna 2013, p. 307), details on where and when the painting was composed remain unknown. It could have been in process in the studio at the time of his death and therefore did not come up for auction in the estate auction. Alternatively, it may have been part of a planned room decoration, completed by the master‘s pupils and fellow painters who followed his style.
