![Johann Jakob Hartmann - Old Master Paintings I Johann Jakob Hartmann - Old Master Paintings I](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A220511/normal/johann-jakob-hartmann-8051022.jpg)
(Kutná Hora before 1658 – after 1736 Prague)
A pair of wooded landscapes with figures and mountains beyond,
oil on panel, each 28 x 42 cm, framed, a pair (2)
Provenance:
Private European collection
Johann Jakob Hartmann was the first Bohemian painter to specialise in landscape painting in the style of Northern European Mannerism, which had been introduced by the court painters of Rudolf II in Prague. In contemporary literature, he is mentioned as a history painter and landscapist, which may have to do with the small historicising figural staffage of his works. Similar to Jan Brueghel I, Gillis van Coninxloo, or Anton Mirou, the artist divided his pictures into two parts: dense clusters of oak trees usually fill up more than half of the picture plane, while the remaining space opens up into a distant view of a river landscape. This compositional approach is based on Hartmann’s familiarity with the works of Jan Brueghel I and his followers.
