Lot No. 214

Giacinto Gigante

(Naples 1806-1876)
The bay of Palermo with the Monte Pellegrino in the background (?), South Italian coastal landscape with rich figural staffage, one signed and dated Gia. Gigante ... 1837, sepia watercolor over pencil on paper, 13 x 19,8 cm and 12,3 x 20,5 cm, unframed, damaged (slightly browned, tears to upper margin), (2) (BH)

Giacinto Gigante was a significant landscape painter, etcher and lithographer, who had a decisive influence on the movement of “veristic” painting in Naples. There he became the preferred painter of the Russian nobility; he traveled with the Empress of Russia to Palermo, where he executed an album with landscapes from Sicily and for the Emperor two large paintings. Only a short time later he was appointed court painter by Ferdinand II. His main oeuvre, however, comprises watercolors and drawings of seascapes, landscape vedutas and architectural paintings, of which there is now an extensive collection preserved in the Naples Museum.
