The Piazetta San Marco is somewhat separated from the Piazza San Marco. The square is neighbored by the Doge’s Palace, the Biblioteca Marciana and the Lagoon. The Piazetta is dominated by two columns which are each dedicated to the patron saints Mark and Theodorus whose symbols – lion and dragon - are each on top of one column. They are said to form a symbolic fortification as they look like a monumental town gate when seen from the sea.
